Trailer Round-up 4/12/2014

I haven’t posted many trailers over the last few weeks since I was focusing on my reviews for several Harold Ramis movies and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  There were several awesome trailers during that time and rather than posting them individually, I’m just going to post them all together.  Click on a link to jump straight to the trailer.

Hercules

Official Synopsis: Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend… Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail… he must again become the hero he once was… he must embrace his own myth… he must be Hercules.

It’s interesting that we get two Hercules movies this year.  I think Dwayne Johnson will do great as the titular hero.  He is one of my favorite actors right now and despite how good or bad his movies have been, he has been the highlight.  I haven’t seen The Legend of Hercules that was released in January, but I heard it wasn’t that great.  Hopefully this one will turn out better.

Hercules hits theaters July 25, 2014.  Directed by Brett Ratner, it stars Dwayne Johnson, Irina Shayk, Ian McShane, John Hurt, and Robert Maillet.

Jupiter Ascending #2

Official Synopsis: Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

The Wachowskis have a knack for creating visually unique movies.  Jupiter Ascending looks to be no different.  This looks like amazing and so as long as the acting is good and the story is great, it’s going to be awesome.

Jupiter Ascending, written and directed by the Wachowskis and staring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, and Sean Bean, hits theaters July 18, 2014.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Official Synopsis: The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

There has been a lot of backlash about the look of the turtles, and Shredder, and his relationship to April O’Neil’s father, and, well, pretty much every aspect about this film.  Honestly, I don’t see what the big deal is.  TMNT has had several reincarnations since they first appeared in the late 1980s, each a new interpretation for that generation.  This is no different.  I understand fanboys, I’m one myself, but I will at least watch this before bashing it.

Releasing in theaters August 8, 2014, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and stars Pete Ploszek, Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, Danny Woodburn, Megan Fox, William Fichtner and Will Arnett.

Lucy

Official Synopsis: From La Femme Nikita and The Professional to The Fifth Element, writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

I’m very intrigued by Lucy.  Superhero movies have become a dime a dozen nowadays, so it takes a lot to stand out.  Scarlett Johansson has been in the genre several times as Black Widow, but now she is getting superpowers of her own.  My only worry is that she will become too powerful since it seems like she is getting every power under the sun.  I guess we’ll wait and see.

Lucy stars Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, and Amr Waked.  It’s directed by Luc Besson and will be in theaters August 8, 2014.

Godzilla “Extended Look”

Official Synopsis: An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

C’mon, it’s Godzilla.  What more do I need to say.

Godzilla hits theaters May 16, 2014.  Directed by Gareth Edwards, it stars Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, and Victor Rasuk.

The Expendables 3 “Roll Call”

Official Synopsis: In The Expendables 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The Expendables movies have always appealed to me because they harken back to a different era of action movies, where big action compensated for a corny story.  The Expendables 3 looks to merge the old and current generations.  The Expendables 2 was a step up from the first movie, so hopefully this film can continue the trend and be the best one yet, especially if it will be the last.  Best to go out with a bang.

The Expendables 3 hits theaters August 15, 2014.  Sylvester Stallone, Jason Stahtam, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terry Cres, and Randy Couture reprise their roles from the previous films.  Newcomers include Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Kelsey Grammer, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell, and Victor Oriz.  It is directed by Patrick Hughes.

Chef

Synopsis: When Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) suddenly quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling owner (Dustin Hoffman), he is left to figure out what’s next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), his friend (John Leguizamo) and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road, Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion for the kitchen—and zest for life and love.

I want to see Chef for three reasons: 1) it’s written by Jon Favreau, 2) it’s directed by Jon Favreau, and 3) it stars Jon Favreau… and Robert Downey, Jr… and Scarlett Johansson… and Sofia Vergara.

Written, directed and starring Jon Favreau, Chef goes to theaters on May 9, 2014, and also stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt and John Leguizamo.

Godzilla (2014) Trailer

Official Synopsis: An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

The marketing for Godzilla is an example of how to do trailers right.  It reminds me a lot of Cloverfield where we are only getting glimpses of the beast but never seeing the whole thing.  Other than his back in posters and the trailers and his face for a second or two at the end of this trailer, not much is seen of Godzilla.  So far much hasn’t been given away about the plot except for destruction and a sense of helplessness of the military against the Godzilla.

Bryan Cranston is a very versatile actor, so I’m excited to see him on screen.  I didn’t realize Ken Watanabe was in this film so my excitement level went up a few points when I saw/heard him in the trailer.  Not much is seen yet of Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson except for a few brief shots.  If there is a second trailer hopefully they will be more prevalent then.

I know Godzilla is supposed to be tall, but if the poster below is accurate, I think he may be too tall.  As much flack as the 1998 Godzilla receives, I do think the size of Godzilla was a good fit.  But I guess on the flip side, by having him be really, really big it will just make his defeat that much more gratifying.  We’ll see what happens I guess.

Godzilla hits theaters May 16, 2014.  Directed by Gareth Edwards, it stars Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, and Victor Rasuk.

Godzilla (2014) Teaser Trailer

Official Synopsis: An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

Despite being a longer-than-usual teaser trailer, we still don’t see very much, just like a normal teaser.  My favorite part is seeing Godzilla’s silhouette through the smoke and destruction.  It gives a good idea how gargantuan Godzilla is.  The tone is fitting for a monster movie and I am really digging it.  This trailer does exactly what teasers are supposed to do: wet my appetite for more.  I can’t wait until the next, full trailer.

Godzilla hits theaters May 16, 2014.  Directed by Gareth Edwards, it stars Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, and David Strathairn.
