Jupiter Ascending Review

Review #101

Jupiter Ascending movie posterSynopsis
Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) is a maid who hates where she is in life. Her life changes when she gets attacked by aliens and is rescued by Caine Wise (Channing Tatum), and she learns that she is the reincarnation of the leader of the House of Abrasax and rightfully owns Earth. But the three Abrasax children, Balem (Eddie Redmayne), Kalique (Tuppence Middleton), and Titus (Douglas Booth) are reluctant to give up their rule.

Review
When I first saw the trailer for Jupiter Ascending, I was excited. For two reasons: The Wachowskis. I haven’t seen Cloud Atlas but everything else they have been involved in I have greatly enjoyed (yes, even Speed Racer). After it got pushed back from August of 2014 to this February, I was a little bummed but understanding since it looked very special effects heavy. So I was excited when it was finally here. I wanted to really like this movie when I left the theater, I really did. Unfortunately, I simply liked it.

First things first, it’s understandable why Jupiter Ascending was delayed six months just by looking at it. A good portion of this film is composed of CGI. I think it looks pretty good. If there is one thing the Wachowskis are good at is understanding how to make their movies aesthetically pleasing. Everything from the environments to character design clearly had a lot of time put into it. It’s hard to pick out something in particular that stands out but I would have to say when there were zoomed out shots of anything, I was amazed.

Along with the CGI, I am glad to see many of the actors playing alien creatures wore makeup. There is something comforting about seeing special effects that aren’t computer-generated. It seems nowadays most films opt to use CGI to create anything non-human, so it appears the art of makeup is slowly going away. Many of the aliens had cool designs that would have looked corny otherwise.

There were a few laughs to be had throughout the film. One of the highlights was seeing that even in an advanced civilization, they still had to deal with bureaucracy and long lines like the DMV. Although it may be saying something if that was the highlight of the humor. I’m not sure if I didn’t find any of the jokes funny or I just didn’t notice them.

Clocking in at around two hours, Jupiter Ascending tries to get through a lot, so it moves pretty quickly. This both helps and hurts it. As I said, there is much it tries to do and it manages to do all of it. However, the story suffers because of it. For instance, one of the characters tries to build Jupiter’s trust only to betray it. Had the movie gave more time with Jupiter and this specific character, the betrayal could have been much more shocking. Instead, there was no build up, no reason for me to care this character was making an effort to deceive Jupiter. Also, many of the scene transitions were jarring because scenes were cut short abruptly to keep trudging along to the next scene.

Another casualty of the quick pace was the love story. First off, I think it was unnecessary in the first place. But second, if a movie contains a love story, it should have time to bloom and build the relationship between the two characters. It comes up maybe three times throughout the film and the first time it seemed, at least to me, to just show up without any kind of build up. With as much as the film was trying to accomplish, there wasn’t room for another subplot. It could have been removed and nothing would have changed.

Jupiter Ascending is one of those rare films that tries to be unique and do its own thing in a world filled sequels and reboots. Unfortunately, it tried to do too much and trips over itself. I enjoyed it but still found myself leaving the theater with a twinge of disappointment.

Trailer Round-Up 9/30/14

So I have been trying to create posts for trailers over the last week or so, but so many good trailers have come out in that time that I’m just going to do another Trailer round-up.  I forgot to include the second full trailer for Interstellar in my last TRU, so that’s first on the list.  Also, the world Jupiter Ascending gets explored, the old chaps of Kingsman: The Secret Service prove you don’t have to be young to kick ass, Reese Witherspoon gets a double dose of trailers with The Good Lie and Inherent Vice, and Neeson’s Brian Mills is out for revenge in Tak3n.  To jump to a specific trailer, click on it’s link below.

Interstellar #2

Synopsis: Interstellar chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

The more I see of Interstellar, the more I can’t wait.  I like how the first trailer and most of this trailer have focused on Matthew McConaughey and his family before his launch into space.  Then what is shown in their space adventures doesn’t look to give too much away.  Nolan has proven himself a more than capable story teller. Interstellar has everything going for it, so I hope it can pull it all together to create something great.

Interstellar blasts into US theaters November 7, 2014. Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, it stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Mackenzie Foy, Casey Affleck, Timothee Chalamet, David Oyelowo, David Gyasi, and Michael Caine.

Kingsman: The Secret Service #2

Official Synopsis: Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

The biggest surprise for me from this trailer was learning that Samuel L. Jackson was the villain of this movie.  The previous trailer didn’t give that impression.  In other news, the action and special effects look pretty good. With actors like Colin Firth, Michael Caine, and Samuel L. Jackson, I’m hoping this is one of the better films this fall.

Kingsman: The Secret Service opens in US theaters October 24, 2014, directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Michael Caine, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Jupiter Ascending #3

Official Synopsis: Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

I have one thing to say about this movie: it looks gorgeous!  The Wachowskis have proven they know how to make a movie look pretty and Jupiter Ascending looks to be no different.  I can understand why the film has been delayed for so long if the time was spent on the visuals (it was originally supposed to come out this past July).

Jupiter Ascending, written and directed by the Wachowskis and staring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, Douglas Booth, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Eddie Redmayne, and Terry Gilliam, hits US theaters February 6, 2015.

The Good Lie – International Trailer

Official Synopsis: They were known simply as “The Lost Boys.” Orphaned by the brutal Civil war in Sudan that began in 1983, these young victims traveled as many as a thousand miles on foot in search of safety.  Fifteen years later, a humanitarian effort would bring 3600 lost boys and girls to America.

It has been a long time since I have seen a Reese Witherspoon film.  I missed the trailer for this movie that was released during the summer, but I’m glad I caught this one before it’s release.  I am a fan of The Blindside, so having one of its executive producers be a part of this film is great.  I probably won’t see it in the theaters, but I will definitely check out The Good Lie when it gets released on home video.

The Good Lie will be in US theaters this Friday, October 3, 2014.  Directed by Philippe Falardeau, it stars Reese Witherspoon, Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany, Emmanuel Jal, Corey Stoll, Sarah Baker, and Kuoth Wiel.

Inherent Vice

Official Synopsis: When private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say. It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

This movie just looks like a ton of fun.  I’m not quite sure what to make of it yet, but it just screams “insanity.” And I like it.

Inherent Vice hits US theaters on January 9, 2015.  It stars Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone, and musician Joanna Newsom, and is directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

Tak3n

Official Synopsis: Liam Neeson returns as ex-covert operative Bryan Mills, whose reconciliation with his ex-wife is tragically cut short when she is brutally murdered. Consumed with rage, and framed for the crime, he goes on the run to evade the relentless pursuit of the CIA, FBI and the police. For one last time, Mills must use his “particular set of skills,” to track down the real killers, exact his unique brand of justice, and protect the only thing that matters to him now – his daughter.

I like how Tak3n isn’t following the same formula as the two previous movies.  Taken was great, Taken 2 was good, but it was the same basic premise as the first.  However, this is something different (kind of).  We will also get more of Bryan Mills’ background and how he acquired his “set of skills.” As a fan of Liam Neeson and the Taken movies, I can’t wait for this one.

“Good Luck.”  That sent chills down my spine.

Tak3n shoots into US theaters January 9, 2015.  It is directed by Oliver Megaton and stars Liam Neeson, Forest Whitaker, Famke Janssen, and Maggie Grace.

Stop by tomorrow and take a guess at this week’s Movie Whose Line. Which of these movies are you most looking forward to?

Trailer Round-up 4/12/2014

I haven’t posted many trailers over the last few weeks since I was focusing on my reviews for several Harold Ramis movies and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  There were several awesome trailers during that time and rather than posting them individually, I’m just going to post them all together.  Click on a link to jump straight to the trailer.

Hercules

Official Synopsis: Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend… Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail… he must again become the hero he once was… he must embrace his own myth… he must be Hercules.

It’s interesting that we get two Hercules movies this year.  I think Dwayne Johnson will do great as the titular hero.  He is one of my favorite actors right now and despite how good or bad his movies have been, he has been the highlight.  I haven’t seen The Legend of Hercules that was released in January, but I heard it wasn’t that great.  Hopefully this one will turn out better.

Hercules hits theaters July 25, 2014.  Directed by Brett Ratner, it stars Dwayne Johnson, Irina Shayk, Ian McShane, John Hurt, and Robert Maillet.

Jupiter Ascending #2

The Wachowskis have a knack for creating visually unique movies.  Jupiter Ascending looks to be no different.  This looks like amazing and so as long as the acting is good and the story is great, it’s going to be awesome.

Jupiter Ascending, written and directed by the Wachowskis and staring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, and Sean Bean, hits theaters July 18, 2014.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Official Synopsis: The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

There has been a lot of backlash about the look of the turtles, and Shredder, and his relationship to April O’Neil’s father, and, well, pretty much every aspect about this film.  Honestly, I don’t see what the big deal is.  TMNT has had several reincarnations since they first appeared in the late 1980s, each a new interpretation for that generation.  This is no different.  I understand fanboys, I’m one myself, but I will at least watch this before bashing it.

Releasing in theaters August 8, 2014, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and stars Pete Ploszek, Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, Danny Woodburn, Megan Fox, William Fichtner and Will Arnett.

Lucy

Official Synopsis: From La Femme Nikita and The Professional to The Fifth Element, writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

I’m very intrigued by Lucy.  Superhero movies have become a dime a dozen nowadays, so it takes a lot to stand out.  Scarlett Johansson has been in the genre several times as Black Widow, but now she is getting superpowers of her own.  My only worry is that she will become too powerful since it seems like she is getting every power under the sun.  I guess we’ll wait and see.

Lucy stars Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, and Amr Waked.  It’s directed by Luc Besson and will be in theaters August 8, 2014.

Godzilla “Extended Look”

Official Synopsis: An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

C’mon, it’s Godzilla.  What more do I need to say.

Godzilla hits theaters May 16, 2014.  Directed by Gareth Edwards, it stars Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, and Victor Rasuk.

The Expendables 3 “Roll Call”

Official Synopsis: In The Expendables 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The Expendables movies have always appealed to me because they harken back to a different era of action movies, where big action compensated for a corny story.  The Expendables 3 looks to merge the old and current generations.  The Expendables 2 was a step up from the first movie, so hopefully this film can continue the trend and be the best one yet, especially if it will be the last.  Best to go out with a bang.

The Expendables 3 hits theaters August 15, 2014.  Sylvester Stallone, Jason Stahtam, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terry Cres, and Randy Couture reprise their roles from the previous films.  Newcomers include Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Kelsey Grammer, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell, and Victor Oriz.  It is directed by Patrick Hughes.

Chef

Synopsis: When Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) suddenly quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling owner (Dustin Hoffman), he is left to figure out what’s next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), his friend (John Leguizamo) and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road, Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion for the kitchen—and zest for life and love.

I want to see Chef for three reasons: 1) it’s written by Jon Favreau, 2) it’s directed by Jon Favreau, and 3) it stars Jon Favreau… and Robert Downey, Jr… and Scarlett Johansson… and Sofia Vergara.

Written, directed and starring Jon Favreau, Chef goes to theaters on May 9, 2014, and also stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt and John Leguizamo.

Jupiter Ascending Teaser Trailer

I am a huge fan of the Wachowskis.  The Matrix trilogy, V for Vendetta (screenplay), and Speed Racer (writers), were enjoyable, so anything they have their hands in, I’m on board.  Mostly I’m interested to see how Mila Kunis does in an action role.  She has been in actions films before, like Max Payne and The Book of Eli, but not in a role requiring many stunts.  Over the years, she has shown herself to be a versatile actress, so I think she will do well.  However, I do hope she gets the chance to show off some of her comedic chops.  If movies like The Avengers have shown anything, it’s that humor can be successfully integrated with explosions.

Jupiter Ascending, written and directed by the Wachowskis and staring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, and Sean Bean, hits theaters July 25, 2014.

[EDIT 12/12/2013] The release date has been moved ahead by one week to July 18, 2014.
