Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) movie posterSynopsis
Four turtles, Leonardo (Pete Ploszek), Raphael (Alan Ritchson), Michelangelo (Noel Fisher), and Donatello (Jeremy Howard), and their master, a rat named Splinter (Danny Woodburn), were mutated by a mysterious experiment. Fifteen years later, the four brothers must protect New York City from the Foot Clan, led by Shredder (Tohoru Masamune).

Review
I was in an interesting place growing up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles because I had not one but two series I could call mine. I was at the tail end of the original cartoon that started in the 1980s, plus there was another series in the early 2000s that I also watched. One thing that I have always enjoyed about the TMNT franchise as a whole is that each generation has their own incarnation and each one is different. So having seen a few different versions of the characters, I was looking forward to seeing this interpretation.

In every new version of the turtles, it is very important that the familial relationship between the turtles and their various personalities are correctly translated. That might be what Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles does best. Each of the turtles’ personalities are exactly what is to be expected from them. I don’t want to go into what makes them such great characters and why I like them so much because of their dynamic, so as long as you understand the turtles were faithfully portrayed here then we’re good.

I really liked the look of the turtles. In most incarnations, the main visual distinction between the four brothers have been the colors of their masks, if they weren’t holding their weapons. Here, each of them have something unique about them that fit into their personality, such as Donatello’s goggles, Michelangelo’s surfer-shell necklaces and Raphael’s bandanna. Even their physical appearances differed slightly. It may not be much but these small differences were a nice touch that really made them stand out from previous versions of the characters.

Throughout the movie, I was having a hard time telling if it was trying to be serious or playful. It did poked fun at itself several times. I mean, the series has always had a ridiculous premise anyway and is pretty much a spoof. But hey, that’s comics. For the most part, it did well to understand that and never became overly serious. There were times it felt like it was trying to show a serious side but those moments didn’t last too long and it moved on before it embarrassed itself.

Although the film was around an hour and forty-five minutes long, it felt like it moved quickly and not necessarily in a good way. You can feel Michael Bay’s influence, for better or worse. The movie mostly follows April O’Neil (Megan Fox) but quickly introduces us to the titular turtles, then is followed by one action piece after another. It doesn’t take any time to establish the villains, other than letting the audience they are tough.

There are two villains in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder and Eric Sacks. Most of the time spent with the villains is spent with Sacks, mostly because he has a personal connection to April. This left Shredder relegated to being the muscle. Shredder isn’t supposed to be simply the muscle. He is supposed to be the one giving orders, not taking them. He is briefly seen outside of his suit (which is pretty cool by the way) early on then after that he is only in the suit. As much as this film seemed to get the turtles right, it really dropped the ball on the franchise’s most iconic bad guy.

I thought Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was GOOD :-). Although Shredder was lacking, the rest of the main characters from the TMNT mythos were portrayed well. Despite the normal run time, it still feels rushed, sacrificing development for any character who wasn’t one of the turtles for action. I still had fun but I couldn’t help think there was missed potential to be a great film.

Favorite Quote
April O’Neil: What are you?
Leonardo: Well, miss, we’re ninjas.
Raphael: We’re mutants.
Donatello: Technically, we’re turtles.
Michelangelo: Oh, and we’re teenagers. But we can still have adult conversations.
April: You’re… Ninja Mutant Turtle Teenagers?
Donatello: Well when you put it like that it sounds ridiculous.

Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer #3 & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) Trailer #3

Jeez, that title, huh?  What a mouth full. A new trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) was released this morning, which reminded me that a new Guardians of the Galaxy trailer was released last week, which I forgot to post.  So I figured I would just post them together.  I’m not sure if I should call this a Trailer 2-for-1 or a Mini Trailer Round-Up.  Either way, check them out, they are both pretty sweet.

Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer #3

Official Synopsis: Brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand–with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

This Guardians of the Galaxy trailer is more serious than either of the previous trailers which were more comedic in tone, but it shows more of the Guardians together.  There is still humor, particularly with Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), towards the end.  Other cool things about this trailer: Slight glimpse into Peter Quill’s origin, Gamora (Zoe Saldana) speaks, and a good look at Ronan the Accuser.  There is part of a speech from Quill that sounds pretty cliche, but what do you expect from a comic book movie?  I keep getting more and more excited for this movie the more I see of it.

Guardians of the Galaxy rockets into theaters August 1, 2014.  Directed by James Gunn, it stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Baurista, the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro, John C. Reilly, Peter Serafinowicz, and Glenn Close.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) Trailer #3

Official Synopsis: The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

This may be my favorite trailer for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.  All the turtles are seen up close and in action, as is their brotherly relationship.  To be honest, I kind of dig Shredder’s look.  I just hope he also has some martial arts skills and his power doesn’t come solely from his suit.  Mikey has always been my favorite turtle and it looks like that’s not going to change with this movie.  At this point I’m more intrigued about this movie than turned off.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fights its way into theaters August 8, 2014.  Directed by Jonathan Liebesman, it stars Megan Fox, William Fichtner, Johnny Knoxville, Tony Shalhoub, Will Arnett, Alan Ritchson, Whoopi Goldberg, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, and Pete Ploszek.

And here’s a little something extra: A Transformers: Age of Extinction TV spot showing Grimlock transforming.  That’s right. Grimlock.  Transforming.  Can you say, “Boo yea!”?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) Trailer #2

Official Synopsis: The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

So after about a month there is a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer.  Most of it should look familiar if you have watched the first trailer since the beginning and ending are pretty much identical.  However, the middle is fairly different.  We get close ups of all the turtles.  I do like how each one has a slightly different appearance, rather than just having different colored bandanas.  I’m still not completely sold on their look, but I’m willing to give it a shot.  Towards the beginning of the trailer there are some good shots of the Foot ninjas, too. As for Splinter and the Shredder, we only see their silhouettes.  I’ll admit that I’m excited to see this new adaptation of the turtles.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fights its way into theaters August 8, 2014.  Directed by Jonathan Liebesman, it stars Megan Fox, William Fichtner, Johnny Knoxville, Tony Shalhoub, Will Arnett, Alan Ritchson, Whoopi Goldberg, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, and Pete Ploszek.

Trailer Round-up 4/12/2014

I haven’t posted many trailers over the last few weeks since I was focusing on my reviews for several Harold Ramis movies and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  There were several awesome trailers during that time and rather than posting them individually, I’m just going to post them all together.  Click on a link to jump straight to the trailer.

Hercules

Official Synopsis: Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend… Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail… he must again become the hero he once was… he must embrace his own myth… he must be Hercules.

It’s interesting that we get two Hercules movies this year.  I think Dwayne Johnson will do great as the titular hero.  He is one of my favorite actors right now and despite how good or bad his movies have been, he has been the highlight.  I haven’t seen The Legend of Hercules that was released in January, but I heard it wasn’t that great.  Hopefully this one will turn out better.

Hercules hits theaters July 25, 2014.  Directed by Brett Ratner, it stars Dwayne Johnson, Irina Shayk, Ian McShane, John Hurt, and Robert Maillet.

Jupiter Ascending #2

Official Synopsis: Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

The Wachowskis have a knack for creating visually unique movies.  Jupiter Ascending looks to be no different.  This looks like amazing and so as long as the acting is good and the story is great, it’s going to be awesome.

Jupiter Ascending, written and directed by the Wachowskis and staring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, and Sean Bean, hits theaters July 18, 2014.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Official Synopsis: The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

There has been a lot of backlash about the look of the turtles, and Shredder, and his relationship to April O’Neil’s father, and, well, pretty much every aspect about this film.  Honestly, I don’t see what the big deal is.  TMNT has had several reincarnations since they first appeared in the late 1980s, each a new interpretation for that generation.  This is no different.  I understand fanboys, I’m one myself, but I will at least watch this before bashing it.

Releasing in theaters August 8, 2014, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and stars Pete Ploszek, Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, Danny Woodburn, Megan Fox, William Fichtner and Will Arnett.

Lucy

Official Synopsis: From La Femme Nikita and The Professional to The Fifth Element, writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

I’m very intrigued by Lucy.  Superhero movies have become a dime a dozen nowadays, so it takes a lot to stand out.  Scarlett Johansson has been in the genre several times as Black Widow, but now she is getting superpowers of her own.  My only worry is that she will become too powerful since it seems like she is getting every power under the sun.  I guess we’ll wait and see.

Lucy stars Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, and Amr Waked.  It’s directed by Luc Besson and will be in theaters August 8, 2014.

Godzilla “Extended Look”

Official Synopsis: An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

C’mon, it’s Godzilla.  What more do I need to say.

Godzilla hits theaters May 16, 2014.  Directed by Gareth Edwards, it stars Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, and Victor Rasuk.

The Expendables 3 “Roll Call”

Official Synopsis: In The Expendables 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The Expendables movies have always appealed to me because they harken back to a different era of action movies, where big action compensated for a corny story.  The Expendables 3 looks to merge the old and current generations.  The Expendables 2 was a step up from the first movie, so hopefully this film can continue the trend and be the best one yet, especially if it will be the last.  Best to go out with a bang.

The Expendables 3 hits theaters August 15, 2014.  Sylvester Stallone, Jason Stahtam, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terry Cres, and Randy Couture reprise their roles from the previous films.  Newcomers include Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Kelsey Grammer, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell, and Victor Oriz.  It is directed by Patrick Hughes.

Chef

Synopsis: When Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) suddenly quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling owner (Dustin Hoffman), he is left to figure out what’s next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), his friend (John Leguizamo) and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road, Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion for the kitchen—and zest for life and love.

I want to see Chef for three reasons: 1) it’s written by Jon Favreau, 2) it’s directed by Jon Favreau, and 3) it stars Jon Favreau… and Robert Downey, Jr… and Scarlett Johansson… and Sofia Vergara.

Written, directed and starring Jon Favreau, Chef goes to theaters on May 9, 2014, and also stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt and John Leguizamo.
